Rickshaw puller Rewarded by M.S. Bitta
To act in the face of terror is by no means a simple task, but it did not take a moment for rickshawpuller Salim Ahmed to give the perpetrators behind the Jama Masjid firing the chase. His efforts have not gone in vain.
The Anti-Terrorist Front led by M S Bitta felicitated Salim here today for displaying courage during the firing incident near Jama Masjid on September 19. He was also rewarded a cash prize of Rs 25,000.
Salim Ahmed, who was ferrying some passengers when the attack that injured two Taiwanese nationals took place, had thrown stones at the assailants and even chased them in a bid to stop the duo from escaping.
Bitta, while congratulating Salim for "rising to the situation," urged all Indians to be "active citizens" rather than "mute spectators."
"Some anti-social elements tried to show the country in negative light. But people like Salim make the country proud. While others stood and watched the attack, he was the one who dared to act," he said.
Bitta also said that as the hosts of the Commonwealth Games we "should show the world the real principles the country stands for."
"We shouldn't give them the opportunity to point a finger at us and say we live in a corrupt country and a country that is failing. We need to fight against this image. If someone as simple as Salim can do it, why can't each one of us?" asked Bitta.
The soft-spoken Salim, while receiving the award, said he was humbled by the recognition. He said he didn't give a second thought before chasing the attackers.
"It was purely on impulse. I couldn't simply watch them hurting people and escaping. They must pay for what they did," said Salim
Asked what he would do with the prize money, Salim said that he would use the money to meet the medical expenses of his wife who hasn't been keeping well.
